Welcome to Wageningen!

Despite its fame, Wageningen is not so easy to reach the first time and moving to the Netherlands requires some planning and effort.

Travelling to Wageningen from abroad

There are two major airports in the Netherlands: Eindhoven Airport and Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam).

You can check the public transportation using the official website of NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen - Dutch Railways) or 9292. Beware that 9292 doesn’t show whether there are any interruptions.

In order to use the public transportation you need the 'OV-chipcard' for paying by uploading credit or buy subscriptions and checking in and out of the transportation. Paper tickets can be bought at the Tickets & Service desk at major stations with a supplement cost of 1€.

There are two versions available: anonymous and personal.
An anonymous OV-chipcard can be bought for €7.50 at the station from NS ticket machines with the blue sign and white NS logo across the top and from the top and form the Tickes & Sevice counters.
You can also buy an anonymous OV-chipcard at various supermarkets, tobacconists, the Bruna franchise and the service desks of other public transport companies. You can find the nearest sales points by searching here.
This card can be used by different people (not simultaneously) and doesn’t require any personal information, but cannot be used to buy a subscription nor to get refunds if you forget to check out.

The personal OV-card can be bought online for € 7.50 and received at home in Benelux and Germany requires personal information, photo and bank account information. It can be used only by the cardholder. The advantages are the possibility of buying subscriptions and demanding refunds if you forget to check out or the card is either broken or stolen with credit on it.

Once arrived in Wageningen you need to take an appointment at the Gemeente Wageningen (Municipality) for registering as resident. The first time you register you will receive the BSN (burgerservicenummer, citizen service number). You will need it for accessing healthcare, opening a bank account and find jobs. You must communicate to the municipality every time you move within Wageningen within 3 months from the moving.
